Smart New Freighter At Lyttelton
The smart, one-year-old motor vessel, Glanely, which arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday to discharge 2000 tons of general cargo from the United Kingdom, is another of a stream of new British vessels which have visited Lyttelton since the war. The single screw, 14j-knot Glanely, of 8260 tons, is commanded by Captain F. I. Day, of Sunderland, who has served with his company. W. J. Tatem, of London, since he first went to sea. and is paying his first visit to New Zealand.
Before her present Shaw. Savill, and Albion Line charter, the Glanely was trading
to India under charter to the Scindian Line, a prominent shipping company of the Republic of India. Captain Day, who is married, with a young son and daughter, said that the W. J. Tatem company permitted him to take his family to sea at times. The company, which trades under the name of the Atlantic Shipping and Trading Company, Ltd., was founded by Lord Glanely, a prominent man in English racing until he died during the last war. One of three ships in the company, the Glanely is the second-latest vessel. The other two vessels are the
Filleigh and the Landwade. The company's normal run with these ships is from the United Kingdom to the west coast of North America. The Glanely, built by Austin Pickersgills. of Sunderland, has a crew of 36, including two apprentices. A feature of the crew’s accommodation is that each man has his own cabin. All accommodation for officers and crew is of a high standard—remarkably spacious, light, and tastefully finished. Navigational and cargo gear are of the most modern type, and the Glanely has radar, gyro, radio-telephone, and all the modern appliances for safe navigation and cargo handling. Life-saving apparatus includes two fibre-glass lifeboats.
Captain Day said yesterday that he has enjoyed seeing something of New Zealand, and had made several friends in Wellington. He was impressed with the friendliness of New Zealand people, he said.
Upon completion of discharge. the Glanely is expected to sail for Sydney and Newcastle at the end of the week, where she will load wheat for South Africa.
