Big Audiences At City Competitions

A varied programme of 44 events in the vocal, instrumental, speech and dancing sections continued the Christchurch Competitions Society’s forty-ninth annual festival yesterday. More than 1000 persons attended the day’s performances which were held in four halls throughout the city. “All programmes have been designed to be as entertaining as possible for the public,” said Mi - O. H. Houison, secretary of the society. “Attendance figures show an increase on last year and audiences are receiving the events with marked enthusiasm.”

A full house greeted performers in the evening demonstration concert at the Civic Theatre. A varied programme given by winners of the day’s events was presented.

The highlight of the evening was Lee McMenamin, the winner of the character dance in the 10 to 12 years group with her characterisation of “Sports Day at St. Trinians.” Judges’ Comments

“I am quite pleased with the standard of performances shown in this section,” said Miss Bertha Rawlinson, the judge of the vocal section. “However, I am more impressed by the uniformly good quality shown by the male competitors. Many of the women have tremolo which they should endeavour to correct now.

“There are many promising young performers in the 12 to 14 age group. This gives evidence of the excellent teaching they are receiving. “The singer who has most impressed me is a little girl in the eight to 10 years' group, Rosina Browning. This child showed more understanding of her songs than many adults, and she put across the meaning of them to her audience with ease and artistry and without precociousness.” Recalls for the finals of the Flint Cup (tap dance), which will be held in tonight's demonstration concert at the Civic Theatre, are Maureen Adair, Patricia Adair, and Mary Wise.
