Elderly people are best i cared for in their own homes, ' according to findings published in a special report on elderly patients in public . hospitals issued by the Medical Statistics Branch of the Health Department. J Prepared by the Director of . Welfare Services (Dr. G. O. , L. Dempster) and the Assistant Director, Division of Hospitals (Dr. I. J. Jeffery), the report says that hospitals , should be used where their I use is indicated, but “it is . against the person’s interest . to make him a patient too soon or too long.” “The aspect of family strain . has not been ignored but there are more suitable places than public hospitals . in which older persons can spend their declining years," the report says. Discussing the death rate among persons aged 65 and over, the report says that i three most common causes of death are degenerative cardiovascular disease, vascu- ■ lar lesions of the central nervous system and malignant i neoplasm tumours.
