Gildirect Has Good Sprint Win
Gildirect made amends for two disappointing efforts earlier at the meeting with a good win in the Farewell Handicap at Forbury Park. He was awkwardly placed in the middle of the field most of the way, but he improved sharply inside the half-mile, joining Erin’s Castle racing to the two and a-half furlongs. Erin’s Castle and Gildirect were together racing to the straight, at least two lengths in front of-Highland Heath, which was improving. Takitimu was another two lengths back, ahead of Finestra, Bonnie Lustre and Waitaki Child. Erin’s Castle was soon headed by Gildirect, which was kept up to his work to beat Highland Heath by a , length. Highland Heath raced right up to his earlier form at the meeting by taking second place. He was chopped back to the rear at the end of half a mile. He put in a great run for his placing a length in front of Erin’s Castle, which also did well to finish so close up. Aquaplane made ground for fourth two lengths away, just ahead of Waitaki Child, with Finestra. Bonnie Lustre and Zany following. The hot favourite, Schnapps broke just after the start and was pulled up.
1 Glenfern In Fonn ; Glenfern, which did not start ton the first night, showed gameI ness to win the Railway Handicap. Tarseal took the lead at the end of five furlongs and 5 1 looked to have the field in trouble when he turned for "home ahead of Glenfern. With I Our Jimmy, Welburn and Attract next, clear of Procrastini ator. Tarseal broke jOO yards out j and Glenfern worked to the . front. Tarseal came again, but . Glenfern held him oft by a s short head. , Tarseal’s effort was a great one as he started from 60 yards, r He was three lengths in front i of Our Jimmy, which had every ; chance, but was not good ‘ enough. ! Attract had the run of the ! race and battled on for fourth la length back, ahead of SuperI way, which made up ground, , Dark Lorene, Mighty Ruston and Catapult. Superway, Dame Margot. Dark Lorene. Fallacious, and ; Tarseal lost ground In the first I furlong. i At False Otitis Leslie Grattan. a fast- , finishing third in the Fairfield ■ Handicap earlier In the night. ' was allowed to pay a false win dividend of £l7 7s 6d when he was successful in the Peninsula Handicap. Leslie Grattan was slow away and still had nine horses ! in front of him at the five furlongs. He began to move up wide out approaching the straight where he was behind Silvester. Jack Super. Young Conga, and Peat Moss, with ■ Sanfarer and Thunderbolt handy. i Silvester was in trouble inside the furlong and Peat Moss looked likely to win until Leslie , Grattan joined in wide out on the track. Leslie Grattan responded well to win by half a length. Peat Moss fought on gamely for second, three lengths In ! front of Jack Super, which beat Jockles. a alow beginner, bv a neck. Thunderbolt and Silvester were close up. clear of Young Conga ind Sanfarer. with the others well beaten. Flying Paddy Again , Flying Paddy repeated his first-night effort with another t decisive win in the Tahuna Handicap. K. Balioch restrained him in fifth place mast of the way. Rast Assured took the lead from John Black near the I mile post and he wa« still in front at the straight entrance i where Catapult, John Black,
Flying Paddy and Spotless were close up. Rest Assured was soon in trouble and Flying Paddy took control early in the run home. He finished full of running and won by a length and a half. Bandsaw, after breaking early and being well out of his ground in the middle stages, came home in grand style to take second place half a length in front of the tiring Rest Assured. Catapult had every chance and was half a length back fourth, just ahead of Spotless, with John Black close up next, well clear of Fallacious. Keen Finish Lauder Scott finished strongly wide out to gain a narrow win in the Fairfield Handicap. He was well placed on the inside, improving sharply near the three furlongs where the pace was increased sharply. No Charge took the lead at the end of half a mile, but two furlongs from home he began to tire and Peat Moss worked clear. Peat Moss turned for home just ahead of Latest, with Thunderbolt and Lauder Scott close up. Peat Moss was hotly challenged by Lauder Scott over the last 100 yards, the lastnamed doing slightly the better to gain a nose decision. Peat Moss pased a fine race and it was only in the last stride or two that he was caught. He was a length in front of a fast finisher in Leslie Grattan, which lost 30 yards at the start. Latest was half a length back fourth, just ahead of Thunderbolt, with a gap to Dither, Jack Super and No Charge. r Division Race Gold Globe and Whipaway gained decisive wins in the divisions of the Southland Handicap. Gold Globe led throughout the first division. She had her opponents covered all the way and R. Young did not have to ask her for a serious effort to win by a length and a half. Mannequin Parade made up ground from the middle of the field to take second place by half a length from Lady Ngaire, with Adios Duenna. Delegate. Truculent and Worthy Flicka next. Whipaway was slow away in the second division, but he began to improve with seven furlongs left. He was four wide leaving the straight the last time and was third into the straight. He mastered the pacemaker. Implore, inside the furlong and responded well to beat him by two lengths. Implore was a nose in front of a fast finisher in Dorstan, with Stormy Parade Cornish Lad and Directway next, clear of the remainder.
