WAIRAKEI FIRE

Laboratories Burnt Out

Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 3. Hundreds of pounds worth of damage was done early this morning when fire swept through the Ministry of Works laboratories at Wairakei. The fire started in the concrete laboratory, and went through to the steam measurements section. It was discovered by the project engineer, Mr A. C. L. Fooks, who was working late. The Taupo Volunteer Fire Brigade was called, and thousands of pounds worth of equipment was shifted out of the building just ahead of the flames. Laboratories of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in the same building suffered smoke and water damage. “This will make a difference to our test programme,” said Mr Fooks today. “However, since most of the equipment was saved, we can continue to work as soon as we get the laboratories into temporary accommodation.” Carpenters were at work today restoring the badlydamaged part of the building.
