Increase Last Month
The 123.654 tons of cargo bandied at Lyttelton last month brought the total since October, the beginning of the board’s financial year, to 863.167 tons, compared with 631.041 in the corresponding period of the previous year. Mr A. L. Burk, the secretary-manager, told the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday There had been a glut of imports. and the board should be careful to look at the figures as an exception, said Mr G. Manning. Imports last month were 92365 tons, compared with 46.849 in April, 1960. The biggest increase was in imports from foreign ports—--57336 tons, compared with 18591—and from British ports—ll33s tons, compared with 2396. Exports were slightly increased—3l3B9 tons, compared with 29.964 Mr W P Glue asked whether Kaiapoi had had an effect on coastal shipping. Coastal imports last month were 18.999 tons, compared with 22,738 last April! and exports 17565. against 18,871 Shipping to Kaiapoi had definitely been a factor, Mr Burk said. Also, when Lyttelton was congested recently, some coastal shipping for Lyttelton had been diverted to other ports.
