TIMBER FOR DECKING

Pinus Supply Inadequate

It now appeared that supplies of pinus timber for decking the new parking area in Lyttelton would be insufficient, and he was ordering hardwood from Australia, Mr J. A. Cashin, the engineer-in-chief. reported to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. “We are not at all pleased with the delivery of pinus for the new works,” Mr Cashin said. Officers of the New Zealand Forest Service had assisted the board in preparing specifications for the timber and its treatment. Even with the specifications modified, the timber for experiments did not arrive on time.

The decision to use pinus had been made to save several thousands of pounds.

"but it looks as though we will have to abandon the idea and have to order hardwood from Australia,” Mr Cashin said. ‘,‘lt seems that the quantities of pinus cannot be cut for us in the South Island to the specifications we require.”

Could the hardwood be obtained? asked Mr G. Manning.

Hardwood supplies had always been a worry, Mr Cashin replied. The position was now very much better than it had been for some years, but there was no guarantee that it would remain that way.

way. When No. 7 wharf was reconstructed. the board had obtained some supplies of hardwood from British Guiana. He had made some inquiries there, but was not at all hopeful that the board could rely on that source. Mr Cashin said the work of constructing the parking area was now 74 per cent, completed. The decking was not holding up the completion.
