ADDINGTON MARKET Good Sale For Nearly 2000 Store Cattle
N early 2000 head of store cattle were yarded at Addington market yesterday, including almost 1300 calves, but there was still a remarkably good sale. Values for calves may have been fractionally easier than late good rates, but a factor in this was that the quality of the entry was not as good as at recent sales. When the sale got into full swing on the truck lots of calves values came very close to late levels, and the market was a very keen one. A pen of black steer calves brought the good price of £34 18s 6d. A feature of the adult cattle sale was the entry of nearly 200 2{-year-old steers from the St. James Station, Hanmer. These averaged a fraction better than £4O each. Grown steers in general looked to firm by up to 20s a head, and cows reliably mated were keenly competed for. Store sheep values tended to be easier in the face of slacker competition. Apart from the best lambs there was a decline of Is to 2s. Older ewes were also considered to be easier with interest confined to the better lines. Romney wether from the Chatham Islands sold about in keeping with freezing schedule expectations.
STORE SHEEP Although a large gallery followed the store sheep sale competition was fairly slack and there was a further easing in values for lambs and ewes. The entry at 8508 was much larger than last week when only 1875 were varded for the single-day market. The offering included 5466 lambs (1298 last week), 1602 older ewes (178 last week), and 1440 wethers (329). The lamb offering was of very mixed quality including a proportion of top-class forward condition sheep and also a large percentage of typical end-of-season consignments. For the medium and poorer class of wether lamb the market would be easier by a shilling to two shillings a head, but the best of the offering still met a reasonably good market at par to a shade easier. Tire ewe lamb offering was of fairly modest proportions and was not notable for quality. Except for an odd pen values were a little better than wether lamb prices. Best fine wool wether lambs sold from 38s to 46s 6d with average to good at 30s to 37s and others at 24s to 295. The pick of the Romney and Romney cross wether lambs ranged from 40s to 45s 6d. with good at 36s to 395. average from 30s to 345, and others down to 255. Average to good shorn wether lambs ranged from 35s to 41s. Down cross lambs ranged from 40s to 46s 6d for the best, good made from 35s to 38s, and others sold down to 225. Ewe lambs, among which fine wool sorts predominated, ranged from 50s to 52s for the best, with average to good at 40s to 455. and others at 27s to 35s 6d. Shorn Romneys made from about 29s to 40s. Top price for wether lambs was 46s 6d paid for 100 halfbreds out of a consignment of 326 from E. W. Pawsey (Hawarden). I. S Douglas (Ethelton) also sold 73 Corriedale wether lambs at 42s For 61 RomneyCorrledales Miss E Price (Poranui) received 45s 6d. and another 80 in the same line brough 44s 6d. Miss E. Richards (Round Top) had one of the best straight Romney sales with 75 at 44s and for Down Cross lambs J. A. Stewart (Hawarden) was paid up to 46s 6d tor 24. R A Cox (Halswell) 39 Down cross lambs at 395; E, L. and D, J Williams (Robinson’s Bay), 46 Romney-Border cross ewe lambs at 50s. The entry of older ewes was a small one, but it included several pens of well-grown, reliably-mated sheep with good mouths. Competition was, however. fairly limited and interest was mainly confined to the better sheep. On average prices were probably 2s to 3s lower. Four-year-old Romneys mated with Southdown rams from the Estate S. J. McP. Stewart (Barrys’ Bay) headed the market selling from 50s to 595. Five-year-old sheep from the same vendor realised 475. Apart from these, average Romneys ranged from 32s to 40s. with others selling from 25s to 30s. A line of 98 four, six and eighttooth Corriedales also mated with Southdown rams brought from 46s to 50s for E. M. The yarding of 1440 wethers was made up largelv of Chatham Islands sheep, which were mainly early shorn four, six and eight-tooths. Some of these were a shade on the hard side. The market was not a very free one, but in the light of the freezing schedule for wethers they probably made about their value. The best Romneys made from 49s to 555. with the bulk of the remainder ranging from 41s to 465. A few two and four-tooth halfbreds ranged from 43s to 48s 6d. Top price of 55s went to T. STORE CATTLE The store cattle section attracted one of the largest yardings of the season at 1972 head compared with 442 last week and 1719 a fortnight ago. Considering the size of the selection of calves—nearly 1300 head—it was a remarkably good sale with values only a little inferior to late high rates after the sale got under way propel Ivin the adult section cows and steers sold extremely well. Steers were possibly up to better than late rates. A feature of the sale was the offering of almost 200 steers from St. James’ Station (Hanmer). All two and a half-year-olds, thev averaged a fraction better than £4O a head, which is £5 better than last year. The big calf sale opened on a weaker note with a comparatively poor following of buyers and a run quite early on of small pens of often small calves. As the sale progressed, however. the gallery increased markedly and as the main or truck lots were reached competition became quite keen at values little below last week for both steers and heifer calves. There was strong competition again on the top -quality lines and on one outstanding pen of Aberdeen Angus steer calves which sold for £34 18s 6d bids came hi so thick and fast that the auctioneer commented "You do not really need me up here.” However, quality all over was not as good as at recent sale* and this tended to give the market a rather easier appearance. Compared with late rates best steer calves could have been a fraction easier by 10s to 20s a head with other sorts showing a more marked decline. Heifer calf values also tended to be slightly lower. Steer calves sold to £34 18s fid for 24 blacks sold on account of a client. Eleven Aberdeen Angus Shorthorn cross from I. S. Douglas (Ethelton) made £2B 8s fid. and Lynton Downs. Ltd. (Kaikoura). received £29 3s 6d for 11 Aberdeen AngusHereford cross. A. M. Deans (Kilmarnock) also sold 16 Aberdeen Angus-Herefords at £2B 18s 6d. In the heifer calf section Glen Dhu Station (Motunau) had 17 Hereford* at £2B 8s 6d. A. M. Deans sold 10 of the same breed at £25 3s 6d. and I. C. Mclntosh (Waipara) had another 18 at £25. The following is a range of values for calves: — Steer calves; best Aberdeen Angus. £27 3s 6d to £34 18s 6d; good. £24 18s fid to £26 18s od; average. £2O 8s 6d to £23 IBs 6d; small. £l5 18s 6d to £lB 8s 6d; best Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross. £26 18s 6d to £29 8s 6d; good £25 3s fid to £25 IBs fid; best Hereford, £23 8s to £25 13s 6d; good, £l9 13s 6d to £2l 13s od; others. £l2 18s 6d to £l6 13s 6d; Shorthorn and Shorthorn cross. £2l 13s fid to £26 3s 6d.
