Fine Wools Rise 5 p.c. At Dunedin Sale

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, May 6. Prices for fine wools at the final Dunedin wool sale of the season today were fully 5 per cent, dearer than those ruling at recent Invercargill and Christchurch sales, according to the official report. The sale ended on a firm note. A catalogue comprising 28,208 bales was offered to a fully representative bench of buyers.

Included in .this total was an offering of 1467 bales on account of the New Zealand Wool Commission, which at the October and December sales helped to maintain a price level for Merinos and halfbred wools. Some later shorn clips were offered, but there was a large proportion of oddments. second shear, lambs’ wool and off sorts. Merinos, Halfbreds In comparison with the fine wools at the recent Christchurch sale, prices for Merinos and quarterbreds were fully 5 per cent, dearer. Fine halfbreds and medium halfbreds were 2J to 5 per cent, dearer. In comparision with the Invercargill sale last week, extra fine crossbreds were 5 per cent, dearer, fine cross breds were fully 2| per cent, dearer and medium strong crossbreds were 24 per cent, firmer. The sale commenced at 8 a.m. and it was soon evident that buyers’ limits had been increased. Buying was brisk throughout, and was well spread, with the Continent prominent. Bradford buyers gave moderate support on goodlength, well-grown wools. America and Japan also gave support on wool suitable for their requirements. Local mills were mainly interested in the finer qualities, and their support stimulated the finer wool prices. The offering generally was above the usual standard of the April and May sales for this province, although there was a slight discolouration because of wet conditions in the later part of the season There was also evidence of tenderness. However, the offering produced wools suitable to the requirements of all consuming countries. Range Of Prices The following is the official range of prices:— Merino. 60/64’s, 6470’s—
