PENALTIES FOR CRIME
More Severity Sought
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. A recommendation that consideration be given to providing more severe penalties in cases of assault, ofagainst women and children, and car conversion, was made by the grand jury in the Supreme Court at Wellington today. The Chief Justice (Sir Harold Barrowclough) said the grand jury had touched on an important point, although there were difficulties in the way, and the views of the authorities on criminology were changing rapidly. His Honour thanked the grand jury for its presentment, which he said would be “helpful to the authorities.”
