HURRICANE RELIEF IN TONGA
N.Z. Churches Give £360
To assist in relief work after the recent hurricane in Tonga the National Council of Churches has decided to send £360 for distribution among victims of the disaster.
This was announced in Christchurch yesterday by the general secretary of the council in New Zealand (the Rev. A. A. Brash):
The hurricane, which occurred on March 16 and 17. lasted 36 hours and caused havoc in hundreds of villages, many of which were reduced to rubble.
Thirty-three of the 38 church buildings and five of the six principal schools were totally destroyed. The contribution by the council has been made possible by the response of the member churches throughout New Zealand to the annual inter-church aid Christmas appeal, which considerably exceeded its target of £35.000.
