CHOLMONDELEY HOME
President’s Statement On Costs
Each child at the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home cost £5 a week, not £6 as previously reported, said Mr C. L. Paterson, the president of the Cholmondeley home board yesterday. He was commenting on a report in “The Press” which had been supplied by the students of the University of Canterbury. "Three guineas is the maximum asked for at present, but in most cases the parents cannot afford that sum and it is reduced proportionately—even in some cases to the child allowance benefit of 155,” he said. (The report said that "the nominal charge is only £3 3s.”> Proceeds from the collections made by the students tomorrow will be given to the Cholmondeley home. “As a result of the appeal and an increase in membership, which the board hopes to receive from the publicity, it Is hoped the maximum fee mav be reduced.” he said. The board wanted to reduce the fee for two reasons, said Mr Paterson. “Many will not ask for help because th'ey do not know the charge and think It win be more than they could afford. Others are too proud to ask for help at a reduced fee.”
