Pamphlet Gives Details Of High School Courses
Supplies of a special pamphlet giving a detailed account of the courses available at post-primary schools in Christchurch have been distributed to all primary schools in and near Christchurch. The pamphlet is issued annually by the Vocational Guidance Centre, and has been prepared as a general prospectus from details supplied by the principals of the various schools. The main purpose of the pamphlet is to assist primary school headmasters and teachers to explain the facilities for post-primary education at State schools in Christchurch. As some parents will be receiving copies, additional details and
advice for them have been included.
An outline of the courses available at 13 boys’ high schools and 13 girls’ high schools in Christchurch is included in the pamphlet. Personal Reference In the notes at the beginning of the pamphlet, it is said that in most cases the choice of school may be left to personal preference, but it must be noted that some schools do not provide such courses as commercial and agriculture.
Courses bearing the same name may vary in subject content between one school and another, and, hence, the choice of a course may sometimes determine the choice of a school, the pamphlet says. Ability to cope with the content of a course is a more important consideration than present vocational interest, and the only safe method of avoiding any future difficulties is to embark on as wide a course as capacity allows, and not to be deterred because some subjects seem difficult or of no practical value. The pamphlet provides charts of the various courses available at each school, each school’s courses being divided for the various forms.
