CONSTABLES COMMENDED
Apprehension Of Thieves (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. Two years’ imprisonment for two men, and commendation for two police constables, were given by Mr 3. B. Thomson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today. Appearing for sentence on charges of breaking and entering and theft and assaulting a police constable with Intent to prevent lawful apprehension. Gary Harcourt Gray, aged 24. and Lionel James Fell, aged 24. seamen, were each sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the breaking and entering charge and a year's gaol on the assault charge. The sentences will be served concurrently. The accused had been detected on scaffolding adjacent to the departmental store of Kirkcaldie and Stains, Ltd “Their way Of escape was ensured, provided they avoided detection, but thanks to the vigilance of Constable Churchouse and the determination of Constable Law, these men were apprehended," said the Magistrate. “I think that both constables are entitled to commendation,” he said.
