45 Naturalised At Ceremony

Forty-live persons, former nationals of 11 European. Asian and Pacific countries, took part last evening in the eighteenth naturalisation ceremony to be held in Christchurch since 1955. Since the first ceremony, held in May of that year, nearly 800 nww New Zealanders have taken their oath at allegiance and received New Zealand citizenship papers at similar ceremonies in Christchurch. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) presided, assisted by members of the Christchurch City Council and oflKeri of the Department of Internal Affairs Mrs Manning was also present. Although last evening's number of certificates issued was somewhat smaller than usual, the City Council Chambers were almost filled with friends and relatives of those taking part. Particularly noticeable was the larger number of children and young adults taking up citizenship. Tn his introductory remarks. Mr Manning put forward a plea to new citizens to take the opportunity of helping to enrich the cultural and social life of New Zealand by contributing from their own cultural backgrounds. 9r taking part in the activities of social religious and other organlsatioas in the cotaanmfty the new citizens would aeon learn to accept the ways of life in New Zealand and share with the rest of the people in the future development of the nation, he said. “ValaaMe Daeameßt** Mr Manning emphasised that the certificate of natural lotion was an extremely valuable document to all who held it. “And so I ask everyone of you to cherish and preserve it.” he said. ■ the age of 16 repeated the few simple words of the New Zealand oath of alleg- ' iance.
