TAXATION OF QUEEN

Motion Before Commons f N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright* LONDON. April 27. The Queen should pay surtax on her income of £475.000 a year, says a motion tabled in the House of Commons last night. The motion proposes that the Royal income should be subject to death duties. It was tabled by a Labour member of Parliament. Mr Emyrs Hughes. Mr Hughes said that he had every sympathy with the Queen, in her position, but he thought that as other citizens had the privilege of paying income tax and surtax. the Queen should be pleased to do it too. An American magazine last year ranked the Queen third in a list of the world’s 10 wealthiest women and estimated her fortune about 150 million dollars (about £53 million).
