Position Now Stronger (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, April 26. Australia’s economy was stronger now than it had been for some timet said the Minister of Labour (Mr W. McMahon) today. In recent months thousands of workers had been transferred to sections of industry which were essential to Australia's progress. This “transition period” in employment, however, had almost worked itself out, he said.

Mr McMahon was speaking in the House. of Representatives to a Labour motion about Australia's unemployment He estimated the future level of in Australia as about 2 per cent, of the *work force of 4.2 m. This figure would include 2ftooo to 30,000 people who were "not permanently employable."

He said that in the last two months the Department of Labour had transferred 40.000 workers from their old jobs to new ones; but the total number of workers transferred throughout the community was naturally very much higher. Workers had been needed in transport, metal trades and on public works. The transfer had been essential and the economy was in a sounder position because of It was much too early yet to say when,the transition period: would end but as far as employment was concerned it had just about worked itself cut
