RACING GOOD LIGHT-WEIGHTS IN FIRST LEG
Navarone May Test Gay Tommy
The light-weights Navarone and Flagon are expected to be formidable rivals for Gay Tommy in the President’s Handicap at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow.
The President’s Handicap will be the third 12-furlong race contested at Riccarton in the last month; and it wiU be surprising if the major distance races contested on the course at Easter fail to offer good value. Gay Tommy is the strongest form possibility after seconds in the Great Autumn and Sockburn Handicaps at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. But there were Shoal’s two good thirds in the same races, and Navarone’s fast-finishing fourth in the Sockburn almost in line with Gay Tommy and Shoal.
Flagon won at a mile and • half at the CJ.C. autumn meeting.
He had his win against the hack stayers, and it was his second for the meeting. Flagon did not look very much inferior to Navarro in d’Stance hack races at the Wellington autumn meeting. And Navarro was able to bridge the gap from hacks to open companv at h s first attempt, in the Great Autumn Handicap. Flagon, like Navarone. will have his chance brightened by any further easing in the track.
Shoal seldom fails to go well over the mile and a half course at Riccarton. and she is another that will be suited by any easing in the track. She was third under 9-9 in this race last year when it was run at Rangiora over a mile and a quarter. Canterbury stayers will have comoetition from Otago in the President’s Handicap a”d there will probably be solid backing for the Oamaru-trained Valaris and the Wingatui-trained Fire Bar. Fire Bar has winning form at a mile and a half this season. Irrepressible and Minglow should strongly represen’ Otago stables in the second leg. the Ronald Macdonald Handicap. Irrepressible is ton weight with 9-9 and is 51b above Minglow. They are separated by the Riccarton - trained Roman Maid, whieh in her , training has shaped like coming up with one of her best runs tomorrow. One of her best runs would probably be adequate for the occasion. Fields with riders, and form reviews, follow. 1130 a.m_—
