Speaker Corrects Report The Regional Superintendent of Education for the South Island (Mr T. M. Archer) yesterday denied that he made the statement "in an age when schools everywhere are accepting the slipshod and taming out slipshod pupils” during his tribute to Miss R. F. G. Tyndall, retiring headmistress of the Christchurch Girls’ High School. ' ”, _ , 4 "I am disturbed to find that the. first sentence of ‘The Press’ reports tittributes to me a statement which I would in no circumstances make because it unoj true.'' said Mr Arctjet. ffF have checked with several persona who were present at the farewell function, and they are definite in their opinion that the reported statement was not made. "I believe that what was said was:— ‘ln an age when our schools are sometimes accused oT accepting slipshod work and producing pupils who are poorbr equipped—a criticism which I believe to be quite • unjustified— Christchurch Girls’ High School, finder Miss Tyndall, is a shining example of what a school should be in the standard it sets'.” Mr Archer said that great harm could result from the public accepting “The Press” report at its face value. He was sure the error occurred through the reporter not having heard correctly what he said.
