Electra At Rongotai (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 16. A T.E.A.L. Electra watched its chance to get through Wellington’s weather today. Due from Sydney at 2.48 p.m., the Electra was just 10 minutes from touchdown when visibility at the airport became so poor that it was decided to divert to Auckland. At 3.15 p.m. the Electra was over New Plymouth. Here it was learned that Whenuapai, too, was marginal —and Wellington was clearing. It was decided to have another try for Wellington. The airliner was over Wellington at 3.40 p.m. and was lined up for an instrument let-down. It was on the runway at 4 p.m. with 60 passengers as surprised as they had been earlier when they found they were making for Auckland. The weather closed in again—and 67 outbound passengers waited. Soon after 6 o’clock there was a slight break in the weather. Passengers were quickly aboard and the Electra left. It was due back in Sydney at 11 p.m. New Zealand time. Low cloud and poor visibility played havoc with airline schedules. Six airports In the North Island were closed during the day, most of them for long periods. Affected airports were:— Wellington, closed for all except two take-offs and the occasional landing. Ohakea. Paraparaumu. Palmerston North, Tauranga, New Plymouth. and in the South Island, Nelson.
