STATE WARDS IN N.Z.

Cost Put At £l.2m (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 12. Wards of the State cost New Zealand approximately £1,200,000 a year, said the Wellington district welfare officer (Mr W. Fitzgerald), speaking at the Lower Hutt branch of the Lions’ Club today. "There are approximately 4000 State wards, and it costs £3OO a year to maintain each child,” he said. Mr Fitzgerald said many of the children were committed through the Courts, but some were excellent children who had been deserted by their parents, or were in need of care for other reasons.

The majority of children’s problems could be traced to the parents, he said. Unhappy children lacked a sense of belonging to anyone during the most important years of their . lives The department’s policy was to prevent breaking-up of home life if possible. but public opinion frequently called for immediate action.
