Sir.—“ Agricola,” I think, could handle his opponents in this argument with one hand tied behind his back, yet I feel moved to reinforce him by stressing a point which has so far not arisen. “P.J.A.,” and those of his opinion, make the common error of mistaking mere instruction for education; and instruction, laced with doses of indoctrination, is as near as little Ivan as ever likely to get in the field of knowledge covered by the phrase, “a liberal education.” Nobody has ever seriously suggested that Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, or Communist Russia, have had much to offer the world in the ordinary give and take of human or national relationships, which alone make the place fit to live in Each doggedly pursued its own ideology to the exclusion of the humanities, and if two of them have fallen to pieces it is because neither was educated enough in the fullest sense to realise the unpleasant possibilities which might overtake them as a result of their own follies.—Yours, etc., CARACTACUS.
