GLIDING CAMP

Clubs Combine At Omarama Eight senior members of the Canterbury Gliding Club were the guests of the North Otago Gliding Club at the camp at Omarama during the week-end. Conditions were excellent and all types of soaring were possible. Several outstanding flights were made, one of which was an out-and-returp flight by Mrs H. Georgeson. She flew the 40 miles to Irishman Creek and then returned—against the wind. Her husband then took the sailplane, a Skylark HI F, and flew to Irishman Creek again. He did not have enough time to return. Messrs A. Yates and R. Martell made good flights in a Skylark H sailplane to qualify for their silver C gain of height award. Mr A. Glubb flew to 11,000 feet in a similar aircraft. One of the Otago members made a flight to Irishman Creek in a Slingsby Swallow Sailplane. It was the first time that an aircraft of this type had been flown across country. Another feature of this flight was that the pilot was under radio direction all the way.
