BOWLS EASTER FOURS WON BY WOOLSTON

The Christchurch Bowling Centre’s Easter fours tournament was won by Woolston. Conditions were rather cold yesterday and not the best for bowling, and the green was a little slower than it had been on the three previous days. The quarter-final games were fairly evenly contested with the exception of that between H. Deavoll (Sydenham) and D. Langley (Canterbury). Deavoll had a very comfortable win, 21-7, after 16 heads had been played. Both the quarter and semi-finals were played with a limit of two hours, but the final was over the full 21 heads.

, In the game between R. Barnett (Woolston) and G. Williams (St. Albans), Barnett held the advantage, but only a slender one, until the twelfth head when he led 10-7. A two and a single on the next two heads to Wiltins) and on the fourth head Barnett, with a single on the next head, again took the lead. Williams levelled the score, but on the next, which was the last, Barnett held one shot to win 12-11. P. Jones (Fendalton) came from the back in the concluding stages of his game against J. Henderson (Elmwood) to gain the decision. On the seventh head the score was 7-7 and then Henderson forged ahead to lead 12-8 on the eleventh head. Six shots to Jones over the next three heads gave him the lead 14-12. Henderson managed to get a single on the next head, but two to Jones on the next, which was the last, ended the game in his. favour 16-13. S. Sneddon went away to a good start in his game against J. Simpson (St. Martins) and on the fourth head lefl 5-2. Simpson then took command and scored three on each of the next three ends to lead 11-5. A two on the next head put him further in front. Snedden recovered a little to be down 10-14 on the twelfth head. Simpson put the issue beyond all doubt when he took two shots on the next head to lead by six with one head left to play. Snedden had little chance of getting six on the last head, although he got half of them to lose 16-13. Hard Struggle Simpson had a hard

struggle in his semi-final game against Jones. Jones held the lead 10-8 on the eighth head but on the next he let Simpson take four shots to level the score. Jones took a single on the next head but Simpson jumped Into the lead on the next two heads with a five and a two to lead 17-11. The hurdle was now too great for Jones with only time for three more heads, and the game ended In favour of Simpson, 19-13. Barnett, in his semi-final against Deavoll. snatched the game in the closing stages. Up to the twelfth head Barnett was trailing Deavoll. and at this stage was 10-8 down. He lessened the gao with a two on the next head, but three to Deavoll on the next gave him a lead of five. Over the next three heads Barnett scored well to even the score on the last head. The extra head was full of interest, and on a measure Barnett got the winning shot by less than one-eighth of an inch. In the final Simpson went away in grand style and appeared as if he were going to have a very comfortable win over Barnett. On the seventh head he led 7-2, but Barnett started to close the gap and brought the score level 9-9 on the twelfth head.. From then on Barnett tookcommand for the next five heads, and scored heavily to increase his total to 20. which gave him a lead of 11 with only four heads left to play. On the next three heads Simpson scored three to Barnett’s one. and here the game ended in Barnett’s favour 21-12 with one head left unplayed. The results were:— Quarter-finals. H.
