MUSIC AS A HOBBY
U.K. Visitor’s Choice
The conflict between the two main interests In her life—music and children—was solved four years ago by Mies Elisabeth Ogden. She gave up professional oboe playing and commence 1 training as a children’s nurse. "I prefer to keep music as a hobby,” said Miss Ogden in Christchurch yesterday. Born into a very musical family. Miss Ogden gave up playing the violin when she was six years old, and graduated to the pianoforte. At about 15 she started learni g the oboe. “I had always wanted to play the oboe—l have no idea why,” she said. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music. London, she accepted engagements for playing, teaching, or orchestral work—“whatever came my way.” Nursing Course Then four years ago she decided to enter the threeyear children’s nursing course. She completed it last April, and worked as a staff nurse in Suffolk before coming to New Zealand. * “Again, it was just one of those things that I wanted to do. I had heard about New Zealand from friends, and it was the place that attracted me most when I decided to take an overseas trip.” At present working on a Springfield station. Miss Odgen plans to see as much as she can, working at whatever comes her way. She expects that wherever she goes she will meet people who will share her musical interests, so that she can keep up her playing. Last evening she was rehearsing with the John Ritchie orchestra for their concert tomorrow evening. Working out her interpretation with the orchestra, she showed that although now a determined amateur, she was more enthusiastic about vuaic-making than ever.
