S.P.C.A. SHORT OF FUNDS
Street Appeal On Friday The Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is short of money. Its activities in greater Christchurch may have to be curtailed immediately and the society may be forced out of existence within the next few months unless contributions are made by the public. The annual street appeal of the society will be held this Friday. Volunteers are needed to help with the collection. The services of the Canterbury S.P.C.A. include the regular inspection of saleyards, freezing works, race meetings and rodeos. The society collects and cares for stray animals until homes are found for them. An ambulance service for accident cases is maintained for 24 hours a day and animal owners may inquire about any point concerned with the care of their animals. The lack of funds has meant that two staff members of the society, who have recently resigned, could not be replaced. “The society has an overdraft of £lOOO this year.” said the secretary (Mr D. I. Williams). “During the last two years the society has overspent itself by £2500 each year.” The work of the society is being carried on by three staff members.
