HIGH WINDS AT HERMITAGE
Rain, Snow During Week-End
North-west winds at the Hermitage on Saturday evening were “quite violent,” according to the manager (Mr L. S. Dennis) yesterday. Mr Dennis said Thursday had been fine, but it had rained heavily on the Friday and Saturday. About three inches of rain had fallen on Saturday, and on Saturday night, it had snowed heavily. On Sunday morning an 8 degree frost had been recorded, and there had been a few snow showers. Buildings for workmen employed on alterations to the hotel had been damaged, and a tank stand blown over. The Youth Hostel Association had held a rally at the week-end, and on the Friday night a marquee had been blown over, Mr Dennis said. He said that good weather on Monday and again yesterday had compensated for the “allseasons” weather during the week-end. Strong north-west gales at Timaru on Saturday delayed the berthing of an overseas vessel until Sunday.
