COMMITTEE ON SAVINGS
Inaugural Meeting This Month
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, April 4. The Government committee to encourage savings, particularly among the young, will hold its first meeting in Wellington on April 20. The meeting will be attended by the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake).
The chairman of the committee (Mr C. A. Macfarlane) who was formerly DirectorGeneral of the Post Office, said today that the committee would begin its work by surveying present trends within the various channels of small savings. It would also study capital investment needs, fix reasonable levels of savings, and then determine how those levels should be reached. "Concentration on the young savers is important,” said Mr Macfarlane, "because the young command so much money at present.” The committee, which has been set up as a permanent group, is expected to continue its work indefinitely.
