Junior Cherub; Contest

/CANTERBURY’S first Junior Cherub yacht which was launched last season, has been sold. Its owner, P. Braithwaite, of the Christchurch Yacht Club, who took the boat— Invicta—to the national class contest in Wellington during Easter and has delivered it to a young clubmate, C. Ineson. Invicta is built to the same hull design as the Cherub yacht, but Mander-designed rig makes it more suitable as a craft for boys between 16 and 20. The principal differences between the senior and junior craft are that the Junior Cherub has a mast three feet shorter and 21b heavier than the bigger rig, but carries the same surface of sail.

The light Junior Cherub is seen as the modern replacement of the veteran Takapuna. Eight of the new class are now sailing in Canterbury and a building programme is said to be under way for more. Canterbury was represented by four boats at the national contest last weekend. In addition to Invicta (which is illustrated being sailed by Braithwaite with R. Randall as crew), there were be E. Mace’s Hylite and J. Rountree’s Pania (from Charteris Bay) and A. Raper’s Bali Hai (Mount Pleasant). Another Mount Pleasant Junior Cherub, Tremelo (owned by M. Robertson), was taken north and used by a Wellington crew.
