Tinwald Streets

Sir, —The sympathy and support of the occupants of more than 400 homes in Tinwald will surely be with “Pedal Pusher” in his plea regarding “terrible roads and footpaths” in this part of Ashburton borough. Tinwald residents will not appreciate the official “no comment to make” from the Town Clerk, whose reply gives such woefully slight evidence of official concern. Why can the people not be given the approximate year in which a start may be made on a sewerage scheme and a water supply, both of which should come before the much-needed bitumen streets and footpaths? That the problem is a big one is well understood But it does affect seriously the health and wellbeing of the residents of an important suburb, and they are already paying rates. Most of them would gladly pay more for some progress. Could not the borough authorities give some helpful outline of their plans for meeting the situation? Or are these still too vague for publication?— Yours, etc.. CITIZEN. March 24, 1961. (Any inquiries would be courteously attended to at the borough council offices, said the Mayor of Ashburton (Mr J. Davidson) when this letter was referred to him. He would not comment further.]
