CONSTRUCTION WORKERS
Wage Increases In New Award Pay rises have been granted to workers in building projects, quarries, contracting, civil engineering, constructional and allied industries in a new award issued by the Arbitration Court. The award applies to workers in Gisborne. Wellington, Marlborough, Nelson, Westland, Canterbury and Southland. For the first six months workers’ will receive a minimum of 5s 6d an hour—an increase of lid. After that they will draw £ll 9s 5d a week (an increase of 4s 2d) up to a year, £ll 15s (4s 7d) up to two years, £l2 0s lOd (4s 2d) up to four years, and £l2 8s 4d (5s 6d) after four years. Tunnel managers and quarry managers employed as such will now receive £l4 a week.
Riggers and steel erectors, wholly or substantially employed in that capacity will now receive £l3 Is 8d a week, and steel workers will receive £l2 a week for the first year’s service with increases to £l3 Is 8d after the third year. Extra hourly rates varying between 2id and 6d will be paid for many jobs including tunnel work. demolition, steelwork, scaffolding, laying concrete and operating powerdriven equipment. New hourly rates will be paid to men engaged in sinking shafts and working at heights. Workers attending or operating well-point pumps will be paid 3d an hour more. Working on Saturdays. Sundays or holidays, workers will receive not less than four hours pay at overtime rates. If five hours or more are worked, not less than eight hours will be paid at overtime rates. This will not apply where the worker is making up for “lost time” in a mtual arrangement with his employer. The wages provisions came into force as from January 19.
