MIDLAND WINS

West Beaten By Three Wickets The Midland Cricket Club, of Wellington, beat West Christ-church-University by three wickets in the annual match which was completed at Hagley Oval yesterday. With 167 runs behind West batted much more solidly in its second innings to reach 244. leaving Midland 79 to win. The visitors were in some trouble, losing seven wickets before they finally won with about 45 minutes and three wickets in hand.

N. A. Huxford, the Midland fast bowler, was troubled with a muscle injury and bowled only 10 overs in West’s second innings. The batsmen found the other bowlers much more placid. However, when West’s ninth wicket fell it led by only 12 runs and it took a last-wicket partnership of 65 between J. Cahill ana D. Cockbum to set Midland a target. Cahill, In particular, gave an enterprising display, but the innings of the day was played by R. Thomson, an elder brother of the Canterbury player. His rapid 64 included three beautiful straight drives for six and seven fours. G. N. Gearry also batted very solidly but went out just when he seemed likely to take command. Midland made the mistake of changing its batting order and had to fight quite hard for victory. A. C. Timpson was able to turn the ball sharply and he was well supported by another left-hander, L. Scott. Scores:— WEST CHRISTCHURCHUNIVERSITY First Innings .. 67 Second Innings A. Waters, lbw, b McCabe .. 12 L. Scott, b Huxford ~ 1 R. Allen, b Huxford .. 4 E. R. Morris, b Hines .. 13 G. N.
