CRICKET CANTERBURY BATSMEN FAIL AGAINST NELSON

“The Press- Special Service

j ’ NELSON. April 3. Canterbury’s batting failed badly against Nelson on the second and final day of the ■representative cricket match at Trafalgar Park today. Forced to follmv on 114 runs behind on the first innings, Canterbury lost seven wickets for 80 in the second innings, and only a stubborn defensive innings by the captain. M. E. Chapple, prevented an ! outright defeat Canterbury was out for 161 in the first innings in reply ! to Nelson’s 275, and at stumps was 98 for seven in the second innings.

It was an outstanding match for the former Central Districts opening bowler. P. J. Bloomfield. On a wicket that favoured the batsmen he ■ bowled with tremendous ! energy to take 11 wickets 'for 97 runs, including eight for 62 off 31 overs in Canterbury’s first innings.

Forced to bowl more than usual with Nelson’s leading bowler. I. B. Leggat, out of the attack with an injury, Bloomfield gave his finest display for Nelson. In his flrst spell of an hour he took one for seven, and restricted the two New Zealand representatives, Chapple and P. G. Z. Harris, to nine runs in 40 minutes. Both Harris and Chapple batted with great skill, but once their 91 partnership for the fourth wicket had been broken, Bloomfield ripped through the Canterbury batting, the last seven wickets falling for 33. Harris scored 56 and Chapple 57, both falling to fine catches off Bloomfield. Harris to B. Congdon in the gully and Chapple to G. E. Lowans at leg slip. Harris looked in even better form in the second innings. and reached 20 very quickly before being brilliantly caught and bowled by Bloomfield one handed above his head off a stinging straight drive.
