1100 EWES DIE

Raid By Dogs (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI. April 2. More than 1100 breeding ewes. valued at between £5OOO and £6OOO, were killed in the Punakitere land development block one night last week in one of the most savage dog-worrying raids ever known in this district. Most of the sheep were suffocated by the weight of their own numbers piling up 10 and 12 deep against a culvert, fence and gateway in a comnaratively flat paddock at the Taheke end of the 10.000 - acre development block. More than four chains of fencing was almost levelled by the weight of sheep piled up. The manager of the block (Mr K. G. Pearson) said it was "one of the most sickening sights I have ever seen." Mr Pearson said this morning that there had always been the problem of sheep worrying on the block. In the several years he had been manager he had shot many dogs caught trespassing on the property. Dogs were disturbed eating the carcases after this last raid but slunk away unharmed out of gunshot range.
