Tricks Of Fate At Shirley
The queer tricks played by fate in the game of golf can have had few better illustrations than the incidents that occurred within about half an hour of each other on the seventeenth hole at Shirley during the Christchurch Golf Club's Easter tournament.
The seventeenth is one of the difficult holes on the course, but R. J. Ramsay 'Wellington) had reason to be pleased when he was nicely on the green in two. Then fate took a hand and five agonising putts later Ramsay had completed the hole.
Soon after came W. R. Cant, who hit his tee shot straight into a ditch and dropped out for a penalty stroke. Then without further ado he smote the ball from its wretched lie into the hole for a birdie three.
There has been no grin broader than Cant's at Shirley during the tournament.
