POPULATION OF WORLD

Rise To 3000 m This Year

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 3

The population of the world would exceed 3000 million some time this year, a new report by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs predicted last night. The report estimated that the world’s population was increasing at between 45 million and 55 million a year—at least as great as or. more than the entire population of France. The study covered the world's social conditions since 1953. It showed that the accelerating population growth was accompanied by more and more crowding into the cities, where lack of jobs, housing and education were leading to rootlessness, family breakdowns, delinquency and political unrest. The 229-page report will be studied at the thirteenth session of the United Nations Social Commission, which is due to open on April 17. and at the Economic Council meeting tomorrow.
