KETCH GOES AGROUND
Anchor Chain Parted (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 2. After being lashed by heavy seas and rain for about nine hours, a 15ft New Plymouth fishing ketch slithered on to a reef off Beach road, Omata, early on Saturday morning, and for three New Plymouth people and a Wellington visitor a nightmare drama had ended. The party left the New Plymouth port early on Friday night, intending to fish off Oakura. When the ketch's motor failed about 7 p.m. they anchored and tried unsuccessfully to restart the motor.
Early on Saturday morning the anchor chain parted and the ketch was swept through a rocky channel to the reef. While three ot those on board crouched on the reef holding a mooring rope to the ketch, one of the ketch’s part-owners, Bruce Mills, of 243 Huatoki road, New Plymouth, waded to the beach for help. Mr A. J. Harnish, of New Plymouth, brought his launch to the scene, but there was insufficient water to allow him to take the boat close to the reef and Mr Mills had to swim a mile in heavy seas to carry a tow rope from Mr Harnish's launch to the ketch, which was then pulled off the reef and towed to the port.
