League MR V. BELSHAM LEAVING N.Z.

Taking Position In Brisbane (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 2. Mr V. Belsham. an Auckland cricket selector and a top Rugby League referee. leaves early next week for Brisbane, where he will take up a new job. Mr Belsham said today that his future in League and cricket was uncertain and could not be decided until he reached Australia. . , Mr Belsham played League for New Zealand in Australia in 1948 and after taking up refereeing In 1953 attained world status. He had charge of the World Cup series final tn Australia In 1937. He refereed tests in New Zealand against England (1958) and, France (1960). Mr Belsham’s strong control of the New Zealand-France game at Carlaw Park last year stopped an impending riot. He sent a Frenchman and a New Zealander from the field. Mr Belsham was a cricket allrounder. but never succeeded in gaining Plunket Shield honours.
