Addington Sprint Won By Gay Baron
Gay Baron gained his second win for the season when he outfinished Fyvie Queen in the Otley Handicap at Addington on Saturday. Gay Baron was seventh most of the way, but inside the last half-mile was awkwardly placed and pulling hard.
Super Attack made the pace and led to the straight from Lavengro, Sextant, Josie Gay, Bespoke, Highland Heath, Gay Baron and Jav Ar.
Fyvie Queen raced clear just inside the furlong, with Gay Baron starting a determined challenge. Gay Baron responded well for W. K. Tatterson and won by half a neck.
Fyvie Queen paced one of her better races to finish second, a length and a half in front of the tiring Sextant, which raced three wide without a trail throughout the race. Sextant lasted long enough to beat a solid finisher in Bonnie Lustre by a nose. Bonnie Lustre was near the rear most of the way. Bespoke battled on for fifth, just ahead of Bespoke, with Super Attack, Josie Gay and Lavengro next. The favourite, Jay Ar. broke at the start and he was badly checked with four and a half furlongs left. Pretoria Bob and Corrie Glen, which was pulled up. made mistakes at the start. Gleno ware’s Win Glenoware, which is now being trained by his owner, H. J. Forward. made an overdue return to form with a win in the Wigram Handicap. He raced towards the rear of the field in the middle stages, but he improved to be third to Lucks Way and Regal Duchess racing to the straight, with Serpentine, Master Alan, Ur rail. Ballista, Mary Mavis and Stormont next. Glenoware responded well for R. Young over the final furlong, and he won by half a length. Urrall, which had trouble obtaining a clear run over the final two furlongs, did well to finish second, and he should soon make amends for that defeat. Mary Mavis, after losing a handy position over the last mile, come home solidly for third a neck back, half a head in front of Lucks Way. Ballista made ground for fifth a neck back ahead of Master Alan, which was well clear of Regal Duchess. Meadow Scott was beaten six furlongs out. He looked to be sore.
Dead-Heat Five horses fought out a splendid finish to the Harewood Handicap. Slick Chick and Schnapps dead-heating for first, with narrow margins to the next three horses to finish. Medium Blue went to the front with nine furlongs left. He turned for home on the inside of Queen’s Glow, with Slick Chick further out and Lucky Tryax, Sentimental, Royal Brittania. Elope, Florita and Lavengro next The field spread across the track inside the furlong and in a thrilling finish Schnapps came fast wide out to dead-heat for first, a nose in front of Sentimental, which paced a fine race after losing a few lengths at the start. Royal Brittania finished solidly inside Schnapps and was a head back fourth, a neck in front of the tiring Medium Blue. Queen’s Glow was a short length back, a neck in front of Lucky Tryax, which finished full of running without obtaining a clear run. Florita and Elope headed the others
Change Of Luck Jimmy Grattan brought a change of luck to his partowner and trainer. H. R. Henderson, when he won the Christchurch Handicap. There was merit in his effort, as he was headed by Thunderbolt well inside the furlong. He fought back gamely and won well. Jimmy Grattan rushed to the lead with four and a half furlongs left and he turned for home ahead of Fernleaf and Napoleon Hanover, with Thunderbolt and Dark Louise next, clear of Commonwealth. Thunderbolt and Jimmy Grattan drew out in the straight, with the last-named doing best to win by half a neck. Thunderbolt fought on gamely for second two and a half lengths in front of the favourite, Napoleon Hanover, which had his chance. Dark Louise was a neck back fourth, five lengths in front of Commonwealth, with Antonius. Prinsuva and Medalla next. Resolution, Hydro Boy, Terry Gowan, Fernleaf. Lady Fair, Antonius and Prinsuva gave ground early. Marred By Mix-Up Our Jimmy, a place-getter at New Brighton a week earlier, gained a decisive win in the Yaldhurst Handicap. He began brilliantly, and was soon clear by about 10 lengths. With slightly less than six furlongs left a shaft of Super Cloud's sulky broke and he started to gallop, interferring with Superway. Kaboon Catapult. Mighty Ruston ana Court Out. Our Jimmy led for home just ahead of Gold Craze, Chances Are and Fallacious, the only horses to escape the mix-up. He worked well clear at the furlong and won decivisevly by four lengths from Fallacious, ■which battled on gamely a short length in front of Gold Craze. Chances Are was half a neck back fourth, well clear of Mighty Ruston, Catapult, Welbum and Highland Rover.
