Trustee Bank Committee Hopeful Of Success

“Undertakings exceeding £20.000 to deposit with the proposed Canterbury Trustee Savings Bank have now been lodged with the Canterbury Public Relations Office. Many more are in transit The ultimate total will be well in excess of the £20.000 lodged by the public of Waikato in support of the successful application to establish a Waikato Trustee Savings Bank.” the chairman of the committee for the formation of a Canterbury bank (Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P.) said yesterday.

"The committee will meet this week to put the finishing touches to its next approach to the Government for the authority to launch the bank. The response has been spontaneous. There is clearly a strong public demand for banking facilities of this nature,” Mr Connelly said.

“There are still a lot of people who want to sign deposit undertakings with the bank. They can still do so. Because the establishment of the bank will be an event of some historic significance to the province of Canterbury, and because men and women from all walks Of life, including descendants of pioneers, civic and community leaders, businessmen, farmers, and trades unionists. will want to associate themselves and their children with the bank by having their names recorded in the foundation depositors’ roll of honour, the committee has decided to continue to accept undertakings up until the date it lodges its application with the Government. This will be in about 10 days. “The Canterbury Public Relations Office in Oxford terrace will continue to -accept applications until then, and to forward forms to those who may ring or write for them.

“Before the approach to the public for support, most people here had no knowledge of the functions of a trustee savings bank, the services it could render them, or the many advantages to Canterbury in having such a bank. The Christchurch

newspapers informed the public on these points, and kept them posted on the progress of the appeal. “On behalf of the committee (and, indeed, of the public of Canterbury) I wish to thank the newspapers for the important contribution which they have made towards the success of the appeal. I also thank the Canterbury Progress League for making office facilities available, and its public relations officers, Mr E. G. Beckett and Mrs P. E. Donovan, for the personal services they are rendering,” said Mr Connelly.
