The Primate of New Zealand (the Most Rev. N. A. Lesser) will leave Auckland by air on April 21 to attend a conference of the International Mission Council in Samoa. He will return to Auckland on May 9.—(P.A.) Mr G. R. Laking New Zealand’s Ambassa-dor-designate to Washington arrived at Wellington airport from London last night. He will go to Auckland tomorrow to attend the funeral of his father, Mr R. G. Laking.—(P.A.)

Mr O J. Mackey, manager of the Christchurch branch of the Valuation Department, has been appointed manager of the Wellington branch. He succeeds Mr A. J. Young, who has retired after 40 years’ service. Mr Mackey joined thj Valuation Department in 1930 and became manager of the Christchurch branch in 1960. Mr R. V. Aitken formerly assistant manager of the Christchurch branch will succeed Mr Mackey. A scholarship has been awarded by Oxford University to Mr W M. Wardell, son of Mr and Mrs T. W R. Wardell, of Christchurch. It is a Christopher Welch scholarship in biology. Mr Wardell, who is at Brasenose College, holds the 1959 Commonwealth Medical Scholarship to the Oxford Medical School. He is an old boy of Christ’s College and a former student of Canterbury and Otago Universities.

Mr J. C. Greig has been appointed engineer-in-chief of the Post Office in succession to Mr G. R. Milne who has retired.—(P.A.) The Secretary of Marine (Mr G. L. O'Halloran) has been appointed Sea Fisheries Licensing Authority for a term of three years.

Mr W. L. Watson, deputy director of Social Security, has been appointed director of the department and chairman of the Social Security Commission, in succession to Mr A. E. T. Williams, who will retire on June 30. (P.A.)

Mr T. Wilson, principal of Ardmore Teachers’ College since it opened in 1948, has left for Paris to take up a permanent position with the United Nations. He will be responsible for taking over the organisation of the whole of teacher training for Nigeria, where vast changes are planned.—(P.A.)
