Must Try Harder
The howlers quoted in the , "Times Educational Supple- , ment” are so nearly incred- ’ ible that they deserve a . wider audience, writes “At- , ticus” in the "Sunday Times.” ; They were collected by a man who works in an edu- ' cational department, and the . important thing to bear in mind is that they were made by teachers, not pupils. Perhaps the gem of the collection is a Jetter from a teacher who wrote to say that she would be “gratefull" if they could give her “advise” on how best to “persue" her studies. Another described herself as an infants’ “headmistriss,” and applications have been received from head-teachers for such novelties as “gramophones,” “calenders,” “h u m e r o u s plays.” “speach - training books.” “ack-saws" and “coak.” I like “coak.” I don't quite know why. > "Necessary” seems to fox them. "If nescessary,” wrote one keeper of the Pierian spring, “refference may be made to Mr X” I don't suppose they bothered.
