BOWLS Three Rounds Played In Easter Tournament

Play in the Christchurch Bowling Centre's Easter • fours tournament com- • menced on eight greens yes- • terday. Conditions were . ideal until the third and last » round of the day, when a t very gusty wind made acj curate drawing difficult. > One hundred and two fours have entered and all those • with six or more wins in 1 the section play of eight , games will go on to post- ’ section play. Three games • were decided yesterday. Another three will be played to- « day, and two on Monday • morning, after which one > round of post-section play • will be decided. J At the end of play yesterJ day 21 fours had come » through without loss. This year there are quite a few new skips, and this was very evident on some of the greens, where lack of experi- • ence caused many to play shots completely foreign to the lie of the bowls. The greatest fault was failing to use the opponent's bowls there was a good-rest. The open hand was played and invariably the bowls ran through the head and became a lost bowl. Many players were complaining about the fastness of the greens when in fact the greens were running at about 16, which is ; in Christchurch a normal green. What was causing many players to lose their bowls was the exceptionally wide draw the bowls were taking, and in some cases • the players were not allow- • ing for this. M. Yugovich (Beckenham), > who last week won the • champion - of - champions • singles, came through his • games without loss, but in • his second game he was hard " pressed all the way by H. , P. Rennie (Fendalton), who ‘ just failed, 20-18. J. Clegg • (South Brighton) was rather J unlucky in his first two . games when he went down by one point in each. He made amends in his last game, which he won, 20-15. He will now have to win the next five games if he is to qualify for post-section play. S Snedden (Linwood) is another who will have to win another five games to go forward. Snedden won his first game but failed in his next two. A. D. Smith (Sydenham), who has played off in two centre fours tournaments but failed to win either, was one who beat Snedden, in the last game of the day, 18-12. A. Taylor (Christchurch) had a very convincing win over H. Rule (Linwood) in the first round, 23-12. In his next game against T. Wallach (United) he was pressed all t"he way and won only on the last head. He was little troubled in his last game to beat D. Colley (Riccarton), 33-12. H. Deavoll (Sydenham), one of Christchurch’s leading players, got through his three games with little difficulty. T Smee (Fendalton) had a field day, for after winning his first game, 21-18, he won his second, 14-9. and his last, 28-2. Some of the winners of three games will meet in today's games, and some excellent play should be seen. Results were:— CBRJSTCHVRCH W.M.C. CHURN Section A First Round.—Yugovich (Beckenham) 23.
