List Of Naval Graves In N.Z. Being Compiled
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, March 31. The positions of more than 100 historic naval graves throughout New Zealand have been recorded by the Navy. Their whereabouts have been largely supplied si :e the Chief of the Naval Staff (Rear-Admiral P. Phipps) asked for this information in February. “The response to the request for information has been most heartening,” Admiral Phipps said today. “Many people have gone to the trouble of writing and pointing out not only the exact location of graves within their knowledge, but have also provided a detailed
history of some of the men
concerned." A large number of the graves were unknown to the Nayy. Others they knew existed but had not been able to find. An example was the position of graves of men from H.M.S. Orpheus, wrecked on the Manukau bar in 1863. They were largely located on the north head of the Manukau whereas the Navy had been searching on the south head. When as much information as possible is obtained it is planned to keep a register of the graves, with photographs and particulars, and to restore and maintain them where necessary.
