SEQUEL TO BUSH FIRES
Two Men Fined At Reefton
(From Our Own Reporter) REEFTON, March 30.
A sequel to the serious bush fires which raged over an area of 484 acres in the Inangahua district, including 284 acres of State forest, last January was the appearance of two men in the Magistrate’s Court at Reefton recently before Mr G. A. Nicholls, S.M. For lighting the fire which spread to the State forest block, Douglas Bell was fined £2O with costs. It was stated that this fire had burned for 20 days and had involved local Forestry Service personnel and woodsmen from Golden Downs before being brought under control and finally extinguished. Alfred Borrell was fined £6O with costs amounting to £5 10s for failing to take all reasonable steps to extinguish a fire in a State forest, and for failing to notify the Fire Officer of the outbreak.
Sorrell, who grazes stock in the area, told the Court that he had been more concerned about the safety of his stock.
