HILLARY FINED Apology To Nepal

CN.Z .-Reuter--Copyright) (Rec. 9 pm.) KATMANDU. March 30. The Nepal Government today fined Sir Edmund Hillary’s expedition 500 Indian rupees (£37 10s) for making an unauthorised ascent of the Ama Dablam peak in the Himalayas. It also ordered Sir Edmund Hillary to pay 2000 rupees (£150) “royalty” for climbing the peak. The New Zealander, who conquered Mount Everest, paid the fine and “royalty" at the Nepal Foreign Office today. The Government also informed Sir Edmund Hillary that in view of his “unqualified apology” and payment of the fine, the official ban on the expedition’s proposed bid to climb the 26,690-foot Makalu peak had been lifted. Sir Edmund Hillary’s joint New Lealand - AmericanBritish expedition plans on attempt on the peak without oxygen later this spring.
