HURRICANE RELIEF

£5OOO Given To Tonga (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 31. The Government is to give relief worth £5OOO to the people of Tonga who have suffered as a result of the recent hurricane. The Acting Prime Minister <Mr Marshall) said on Thursday- night that Queen Salote had been asked for ways in which New Zealand could help. She said food, particularly milk powder, flour and preserved meat, were needed in the affected areas. Timber might also be required. Mr Marshall said that the Government had also offered to fly emergency quantities of food by R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft if “The Government is pleased to be able to assist in this small way in the alleviation of distress among a people with whom New Zealand has such close ties of friendship,” said Mr Marshall.
