ADVICE GIVEN ENGINEERS

“Do Not Be Slaves To Specifications” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 28. District highways engineers of the Roading Division of the Ministry of Works were advised not to be “slaves to specifications prepared in head office,” at their first conference here today. The Commissioner of Works (Mr F. M. H. Hanson) said specifications were not straitjackets. They were there to guide by setting a higher standard—which the engineers must attain—and by detailing a method of getting there. He urged them to use initiative and intelligence to keep standards up and costs down. He said that in the process of achievement certain materials might not be available. It was necessary to find out how to get the required results by making the best use of the materials there or which could be obtained economically.
