£7520 FOR BANK

Sum Promised So Far

Up to 5 p.m. yesterday, £7520 had been promised for investment in the proposed Canterbury Trustee Savings Bank. “We have not set ourselves any particular target,” said the chairman of the interim committee (Mr M. A. Connelly. M.P.) yesterday. “But before we approach the Government we would like to have £20,000 promised. “That was the figure which the bank in Hamilton was promised before its committee went to the Government,” he said. When the bank was established, trustees would be appointed by the GovernorGeneral, Mr Connelly said. Under the Trustee Savings Bank Act, 1948. provision was made for eight trustees, except in the case of Auckland, where 10 were provided for. It seemed likely that some of the members of the interim committee would be appointed trustees, said Mr Connelly, but obviously there would have to be some selection, as there were 13 members on the interim committee.
