ESTATE, GIFT DUTIES
Farmers Call For Inquiry (N.Z. Press Association) MASTERTON, March 27. A request for a Royal commission to investigate the incidence of estate and gift duties will be sent direct to the Government from the executive of Wairarapa Federated Farmers, This was the substance of a remit before the executive when it met today.
Moving the motion, Mr I. D. Cameron said that no progress was being made by a political approach.
He added that the information presented to a Royal commission would help the working man to realise that the climbing cost structure, assisted by increases in wages, left him with no more money. Only an increase in primary production would bring a higher standard of living. “You have a great case,” said Mr L. T. Daniell. “Isn’t it high time this policy of plunder was discussed publicly?” Seconding the motion, Mr James Andrew said that because of the shortage of labour on farms, money that would be spent if labour could be found was not spent, and was therefore taxed, reducing the amount which could be spent on improvements.
